The Crew1 MOB AIS units from Sea of Solutions are highly meaningful and valuable devices because, in an emergency situation—especially a man-over-board incident—they trigger an alarm within a radius of approximately 5 nautical miles on all AIS receivers and transmitters after activation.
Commercial vessels are required to keep their AIS devices switched on at all times, and most yachts today are also able to receive AIS. If you have your own AIS receiver or transponder on board, that is of course even more advantageous. Especially with a small crew, locating and recovering a person who has fallen overboard can be extremely difficult.
This is where the Crew1 is helpful: it immediately transmits the position of the person in the water as soon as the device is activated. It also triggers a distress signal on your AIS receiver (and on all others within range) and continuously displays the exact position of the person being searched for.
These devices also do not require registration and do not need to be reported anywhere. Each unit has its own personal device identifier.
